The comedian and the presenter have been friends for 20 years

TV presenter Cat Deeley has revealed how her twenty year friendship with Patrick Kielty turned into something more after he visited her in the US for her birthday.

he couple, who recently married in Rome, had previously worked together on Fame Academy. But it wasn’t until he came to visit her in the States that their platonic relationship became something more.

The 36-year-old told Red magazine: "I know that I definitely wasn’t ready for Patrick until now – nor he me. And we have had to get to a spot where we were and we have. And knowing each other for 20 years is brilliant. That feels like good foundations for the future."

She added: "We’d always been friends and we’d always stayed friends, friends with chemistry. We’d worked together – presenting Fame Academy – but for one reason or another it never happened. We never thought we’d end up together."

The So You Think You Can Dance? presenter also revealed how happy she is.

She said: "It’s true. My parents can see it. They can see how happy I am. I’ve got a lovely home, and I’m so lucky with the career I have. I don’t need Patrick to do anything. I just need him to make me happy and he does. "

However, the couple, who honeymooned in Vegas, have yet to decide where they are going to celebrate Christmas.

"Christmas this year is going to be a problem," Cat admits. "WE are going to have to call in Kofi Annan because I have never had a Christmas away from home in Sutton Coldfield and Patrick has to be in Ireland..."

She also revealed that she’s not sure about what to get her new husband as a gift.

"Well, last Christmas we had only been together for a couple of months and we got each other the same thing: art," she said. "So this year, I’m not sure how we trump that. We might have peaked too soon. Animals perhaps? Maybe a fish?"
