James will direct, co-write and co-produce t he upcoming instalments, which will be filmed back-to-back in New Zealand, with an expected start date of December 2014 or January 2015.
Avatar 2 will be released in December 2016, with the subsequent sequels following in December 2017 and 2018.
The sci-fi fantasy blockbuster, which also starred Sigourney Weaver, Michelle Rodriguez and Giovanni Ribisi, was a huge hit when it was released in 2009.
The three-time Oscar-winning movie broke several box office records, is the highest grossing film of all time and became the first film to gross more than two billion US dollars worldwide. It has also become the top-selling Blu-ray of all time.
James has said that he will expand Jake's story in the upcoming movies.
"We spread it around quite a bit more as we go forward. It's really the story of his family, the family that he creates on Pandora. His extended family. So think of it as a family saga like The Godfather," he said.
