Justin Welby held a short private meeting with the New Zealander, who is in London to promote his film Noah, based on the biblical story in which he plays the title role.

The office for the Ar chbishop said the two men discussed faith and spirituality in their meeting, which came after the film's London premiere earlier this week.

Russell, Emma Watson, Jennifer Connelly, Douglas Booth and Ray Winstone were among the stars who delighted fans in Leicester Square .

Oscar-winning filmmaker Darren Aronofsky co-wrote the reinterpretation of the classic biblical tale, which sees Noah build an ark to save all the animals from a flood sent by God to destroy mankind after they have turned the world into chaos.

The controversial film has attracted mixed reactions from religious audiences but has already topped the US box office in its opening weekend.

Russell defended the film and said: "It has something for people of faith and people who don't have faith. It's an intense experience.

"You come out of it wanting to have a chat. That's the best part of a movie when that sort of thing happens."
