Joan Rivers drew disapproving groans from a US TV audience when she made jibes about Adele's weight.

The acerbic comedienne took a swipe at the Oscar-winning singer on The Late Show With David Letterman.

Joan began innocently, saying that meeting the British star was one of the highlights of her Oscars night.

But the audience groaned when she went on to spread her arms out and puff out her cheeks as if she was fat.

Joan went on: "Oh no, she's thin... What is her song, Rolling In The Deep? She should add 'fried chicken'."

She told the audience Adele was "very scared" about singing live at the Oscars and added: "She was saying, 'My throat, my throat! I don't know if I can swallow!' and I said, 'Oh yeah, you can swallow'."
