The actress - who worked with Hoffman on Charlie Wilson's War, The Master and Doubt - was overcome with emotion when she was asked about the actor during a chat on Inside The Actors Studio.

Struggling to hold back the tears, she told host James Lipton and the audience of aspiring actors: "Gosh, I wish you all could get the chance to work with him. He was beautiful. He's a beautiful spirit and he had this unique ability to see people, to really see them - not look through them - he just really saw people.

"And he will be missed. Sorry, I really... I just really loved him and I know so many people did. And I just don't know how much more I can talk about it right now. Sorry."

Later Amy, 39, broke down again when talking about starring with Hoffman and Meryl Streep in Doubt, saying they were "amazing to work with".

"Both Meryl and Philip have this ability to create... I'm sorry. I'm so sorry," she said, as she started to cry. "To create a world - which as an audience you get to experience that - but you get to experience that in the room acting with them as well. And it's transformative."

Hoffman, 46, was found dead on February 2 of an apparent heroin overdose in his apartment in New York.

Earlier this month Amy was one of several stars who attended the actor's private funeral in Manhattan.
