The couple worked together on new movie 'Just before I go' - Cox took to the director's chair for the first time while McDaid wrote several songs for the movie.
The movie had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival.
The movie is turning out to be a real family affair - it features a cameo from her daughter Coco and a scene with her ex-husband, David Arquette.
Shot in a speedy 23 days in between seasons of Cougar Town, 'Just Before I Go' was made for less than $2m.
"Not having the pressure of the studio, just doing it for myself," she said, "it was the perfect way in for me."
It has been reported in the US that Cox is anxious to have a baby with the Irishman - and the 49-year-old is considering visiting a fertility expert.
"For years Courteney said that she didn't want another baby and that Coco was perfect so she couldn't see why she'd put herself through the trauma of having another child," a source told British magazine Closer.
"Now having met Johnny, she feels having a baby together would be an amazing way to put a seal on their relationship.
"Her friends wonder whether if it's because her 50th birthday is coming up [in June].
"They don't want her to put herself at any unnecessary risk but she's reassured them that she'd never make a snap decision about something as important as this."
Cox has been dating 37-year-old McDaid since last October.
Meanwhile McDaid's friend singer Ed Sheeran thinks he could pop the question.
“I wouldn’t be surprised, but it’s still early days,” he told UK newspaper The Mirror in response to whether he thinks the couple will tie the knot soon.
“They certainly enjoy each other’s company and feel very comfortable with each other.”
