Feeling peachy keen

When you think of peach, you don't exactly consider it to be the edgiest of colours. It's not exactly fuchsia pink or cobalt blue . . . yet, it was the colour of the season during fashion weeks in London, Paris and New York.

Who would have expected models at Louis Vuitton, Alberta Ferretti and Ralph Lauren to be made up in a variety of peachy hues? But then the warm shade is oh-so-flattering and more than a little sophisticated, so maybe we shouldn't be too surprised. Here's how we mere mortals can enjoy a little bit of fashion fabulousness.

Max Factor Glossfinity Nail Varnish in Cute Coral, €7.49

The bottle boasts of glossy nails for up to seven days, but I'm always wary of polishes that promise perfection for anything over a few days. Maybe, just maybe, if the colour has been applied professionally, it might stay pristine for a little longer, but my technique really isn't that polished. However, I applied just two coats of this pretty creamy shade, taking a little time in between, and I was pleasantly surprised by their staying power and the opaque look. Topcoat isn't utterly essential, thanks to the sparkly, high-shine finish of this polish, but I doubt my nails would last an entire day without chipping if I went without. Really good value at this price

L'Oreal Paris Color Riche Nail Varnish in Sex on the Peach, €7.55

Ignore the tongue-in-cheek name (although it did make my inner 14-year-old titter), this lovely warm colour is a classy offering from the 41-strong range. Although it's quite sheer, two coats are enough for a good helping of colour thanks to the wide brush, and I managed not to chip it for several days. Result!

Bobbi Brown Blush in Nude Peach, €26

A lovely, dusky shade of peach, this has a slight shimmer, but it's still perfect for the natural look. Although it has a good colour payoff, the texture is nice and soft so it appears very subtle at first (no matter how heavy your hand), but it's buildable too for a stronger finish. It'll leave pale-skinned girls glowing, and works well as a warm highlighter for those with olive complexions.

Chanel Joues Contraste Powder Blush in Frivole, €37.50

Described as a 'luminous apricot', this buildable matte blush is the perfect tool for working the natural look, thanks to a subtle gold shimmer that leaves a really lovely glow. Layer on for a more intense look. It's so soft that it blends incredibly well if you've gone a little too far.

IsaDora Jelly Kiss Lipstick Peach Pearl, €12.95 (from Clerys and pharmacies nationwide)

Most glosses are hard taskmasters, highlighting every crack and flaw; thankfully this sheer colour is surprisingly forgiving on lips that are less conditioned than they should be. It's nourishing and moisturising too, as it's packed with oils including peach and apricot kernel oil and the almond variety.

Stila Lip Glaze in Payapa, €17.57

For those of you who think peach always has to mean pastel, prepare to be shocked by this bright peachy-pink lip gloss. Just a shade or two shy of hot pink, the colour is strong, but not overwhelming, and well pigmented with a sheer finish that's just sticky enough. It's quite strongly fragranced which may not be to everyone's taste though, and I continue to hate click-pen applicators.

Elizabeth Arden Beautiful Color Luminous Lipgloss in Precious Petal, €23 (also main)

George Clooney's arm candy opted for a classy, flapper-inspired dress at this year's Oscars, but she brought her look bang up to date with her choice of lip colour. She had the perfect pout thanks to Elizabeth Arden's Ceramide Ultra Lipstick in Cameo topped with a slick of this pretty peach-coloured, limited-edition gloss. If this is what keeps George happy . . .

Armani Coral Bliss Palette, €65

Hmm, this is very tempting! It contains a sheer blush in a particularly warm shade of coral along with three eye shadows. The joy of peach is that it works so well with contrasting stronger colours, and this warm, finely milled satin-finish blush is no exception, providing the perfect foil to dramatic eyes made up in long-wearing, frosted Opal, Shimmer Greige and Swimming Pool Turquoise shades. An unusual, yet wearable, way to refresh your look this spring.
