THE first winter snow has arrived just as a big chill starts to grip the country. Both Mount Errigal and Muckish in Donegal and Truskmore in Sligo were capped in snow.
Snow also fell in parts of Limerick, including Kilfinane and Kilmallock, but later cleared.
With the forecast set for plunging temperatures, more snow is likely.
Met Eireann has forecast snow on hills over the weekend, which is set to be very cold. Motorists are also being warned of icy patches on roads as temperatures dip below zero.
Met Eireann says tonight will be very cold with some hail, sleet and thunder likely and snow on hills.
Lowest air temperatures will be between plus 1 and minus 1 with frost forming and the risk of icy patches.
Tomorrow will be a bright, cold day with good sunshine. Sunday looks like being another cold showery day with blustery wind.
Walkers Dion and Mandy Jackson and Fiona Mannion had travelled from Belfast to climb Mount Errigal (above) yesterday and were delighted to be greeted by a layer of snow.
Local amateur weatherman and Donegal postman Michael Gallagher said there was plenty more snow on the way.
