Snow, ice and sub-zero temperatures are on the cards as the recent mild weather gives way to the real winter chill.

Temperatures will drop as low as –4C on Friday night, with frost and icy conditions likely, while snow is also a possibility.

Forecasters have warned that Sunday will see the white stuff land and stay until Wednesday.

Motorists have also been warned to watch out for icy patches along roads over the weekend as the mercury plummets, with freezing temperatures expected in some areas over the weekend.

“There will be a lot of rain this Sunday which could give rise to sleet and we may see snow on higher ground and mountains,” Eoin Sherlock of Met Eireann told the Herald.

“We will see frosty conditions for the rest of the nights this week and temperatures will be between 0 and –4 C on Friday and down to –2 or –3 C on Saturday.”

However, Mr Sherlock says the type of heavy snowfall that brought the country to a standstill in recent years is unlikely.

“It will be mixed in with rain so it wouldn't be widespread.”

“It doesn't look that way for now anyway,” he added.

Frost and icy conditions are set to continue over the weekend and worsen into next week, particularly along the eastern seaboard.

“We will have rain during the day-time on Saturday and there will be a lot of rain on Sunday.

“This could lead into fog and frost at night time and icy conditions are also expected,” added Mr Sherlock.

While Ireland may escape the harsh weather, our British neighbours are in for a tougher time of it with heavy snowfall expected across the country.
