Drivers have also been urged to take extreme care on the country's roads as there is a risk of fog.

A fog warning remains in place as dense fog will linger in some areas today and spread during the night when it gets colder.

“It will get cloudier over the weekend, and cloud clears fog,” a forecaster told Independent.ie.

“It won’t make it warmer but the fog will probably clear tomorrow.”

“Because it hasn’t been raining, there isn’t as much concern for icy roads. The main concern at the moment is the dense fog in some areas.”

Tonight will be the coldest night of the weekend, so wrap up warm. The weekend will stay cold, but not as cold as earlier this week.

The weekend will stay mostly dry, with temperatures as high as 10 degrees during the day and as low as -2 degrees at night.

Patchy spells of drizzle may be seen in the north and east on Saturday, with more showers around the coasts on Sunday.
