In true tropical style, Ireland was warned of possible thunderstorms during the heatwave.

But nobody expected this.

Stephen Lennon captured this amazing footage of the skies in the west being lit up by lightning.

The footage, taken from the Newport Road in Castlebar, Mayo, captures the storm that began at approximately 10.30pm on Tuesday night.

"It was a very intense storm that lasted at least 45 minutes. There was frequent fork and flash lightning," Stephen told Independent.ie.

"I've never seen anything like it before in Ireland."

Sunseekers enjoyed a beautiful day across the country on Tuesday as it was recorded as the hottest day in a decade.

However, barbeques were cut short last night as the heat gave way to a heavy shower of rain and stormy conditions in parts of the country.
