MET EIREANN is forecasting gale force winds of between 100 to 130 km/ph today.
Costal and hilly areas of Ulster and Connacht are expected to be worst affected by the weather conditions and very high seas in conjunction with high astronomical tides are likely to cause flooding on western and northern coasts.
The strong winds will continue up to this evening, but conditions will be less windy countrywide later.
Milder conditions with rain and drizzle spreading from the northwest are expected.
Gardaí have appealed to pedestrians, cyclists and motor cyclists to wear high visibility fluorescent clothing and for all road users to be alert to the dangers of the weather.
