HEAVY rain is forecast for parts of Ireland later today leading to flooding in parts, Met Éireann has warned.

Between 15 and 20mm of rain could fall in a few hours in the south, southeast and east.

Gale force winds with gusts of up to 100km/h have also been forecast in the east and southeast.

Spot flooding, particularly in the northwest, is already evident, and surface water is reported in Mayo, Galway, Sligo, Donegal, Roscommon, Kerry, Westmeath, Clare and Wicklow.

AA Roadwatch is advising people to slow down, increase breaking distance and only drive through water if you know it is not too deep for your car.
