No amount of congratulations and commiserations will make up for the feelings of disappointment that will dominate their thoughts for the next few days.

But the pain will pass and when the dust has settled they will be able to look back on a great adventure and hold their heads high, happy that in the words of Marty Whelan, "they worked their little socks off all week". As one of the naysayers who always thought that Donna, Joseph and the song were a mismatch, I still hold that opinion. But I salute them for giving it their best shot. They sang and moved with a confidence beyond their years and wiggled their asses with some elan. And the dancers gave Irish dancing a very credible modern sheen, which never degenerated into diddle-eye hoofing.

It is only natural that Donna and Joseph will be disappointed, but if they are sensible, they will use the enormous amount of goodwill and admiration they have generated to continue their career, singing songs that are more suited to their style and image. Donna and Joseph are both very competent singers and for my money, Joseph has a little bit of extra magic in his voice. Both also have oodles of natural charm and there is no reason why they can't have a long and successful career here at home.

Shay Healy's musical 'The Wiremen' is running at Dublin's Gaiety Theatre until June 4.
