We are in a dilemma about Vienna
Wednesday August 05 2009
I'm taking my girlfriend to Vienna for a long weekend, and now realise we should have gone to Salzburg. She's a huge Sound of Music fan and would love to see some of the sights. I have details of the tours, but am wondering how practical it is to make a day trip from Vienna? John Malone, Roscommon
Salzburg is two hours and 40 minutes from Vienna by the new Railjet high-speed train, and prices start at around €47.50 one-way (Austrian Rail;www.oebb.at) so it's a reasonably long and pricey day out from the Austrian capital. That said, the train journey is very scenic in places and Salzburg is a lovely place. However, given the cost of travel you may wish to come back to Salzburg for a weekend and be able to see a little more. There's more than enough to keep your beloved busy in the capital, too. If you tire of the world-class museums and galleries of the Innere Stadt, retail therapy is never far away. The area on and around Marianhilferstrasse is a superb place to find both international stores and more unusual local boutiques. For more information on Austria visit www.austria.info.at.
