Train travel from vienna
My two adult sons and I are travelling to Vienna and Prague in August. We have booked a Ryanair flight to Bratislava and are returning from Prague. We plan to stay in Vienna and take a train from there to Prague. Can you give me some advice on train travel? Should we make a reservation or just turn up on the day? If we have to make a reservation, do you know a website where I can reserve our tickets? Mick Fingleton
Great question, Mick, and one that had me scratching my head. Vienna's Südbahnhof station, the departure point for trains to Prague, is undergoing a huge reconstruction project. The Austrian tourist office (www.austria.info) confirmed that direct trains are, during the reconstruction, starting and terminating at Vienna's Meidling station, which is also on the U6 underground line. Services also stop at Vienna's Simmering station (U3 underground line), which should that be more convenient.
There are several trains a day and the best way to purchase tickets is to go down to the station when you arrive and pick them up for a few days hence. If you're flexible with timings you should be able to get fares of less than €40. You can check times and fares at oebb.at.
