Liverpool beyond soccer
My husband and two sons (nine and 12) are travelling to Liverpool at the end of the month. They are going to a match in Anfield and also plan to do the stadium tour as they will have a free day. Can you recommend anything else to do in Liverpool? Marian Monahan
While nothing can compete with the excitement of visiting Anfield — though I hope they get a better result than in other recent games — there’s plenty more to do in Liverpool. While in the area, a stroll across Stanley Park to G o o d i s o n Park, the home of near-neighbours Everton, is essential to understand how the two clubs divide a soccer-mad city. There are plenty of cracking chip shops around both grounds if they get peckish.
In the city centre, the choice is endless. Liverpool One, an enormous shopping centre with every big store you could wish for, offers retail treats galore.
Then there’s the waterfront, dominated by the Albert Dock’s restaurants and museums and the superb clutch of historic buildings lining the waterfront.
Lastly, both the Anglican and Catholic cathedrals are well worth visiting. Liverpool is underrated and close, so don’t just go for the match!
