He has a voice that goes about as low in the register as you can possibly get and the rest of the band have a reputation as being rather dour, but Stuart Staples and his band, Tindersticks, have been quietly releasing some of the most beautiful music you're ever likely to hear for the last decade and a half.

Tomorrow night Tindersticks play Dublin for the first time in eons. With a 10-piece touring band in tow, including their long-serving string section, it promises to be one of the shows of the year, not least because the venue this time around is Vicar St, whose crystal-clear acoustics and all-round sense of intimacy could not be better suited to the band's subtle, lugubrious sound.

Musos often look beyond this country to find music to obsess about, ignoring some fine work on their own doorstep. Dublin instrumental collective The Jimmy Cake have not encountered this problem -- they have received fawning praise for a pair of albums in the early part of this decade, even if such gushing reviews never turned into sales.
