I FIRST met Margaret Browne when I went to stay at her gorgeous Ballymakeigh Country House in east Cork with the late Terry Keane many years ago. Terry had heard that it was a great place to visit, with good food and a great unstuffy, warm welcoming atmosphere. She was right, but I didn't know that at Ballymakeigh I was to also make a friend for life in Margaret -- a life unfortunately cut short last week at the untimely age of 57.

FROM Paris to Milan, New York to Toronto, and Sydney to Vietnam, our ministers enjoyed their fair share of globe-trotting on St Patrick's Day. While the United States and Britain -- among the countries visited -- are big trade partners of ours, the value of ministerial trips to other countries seems questionable.

Living La Vie en Rose? No, but reading about the shocking X-ray scandals in Ireland, I feel rather happy with my lot en France. Instead of making a trip to New Zealand, maybe Mary Harney should take the ferry to Cherbourg, to come and learn a thing or two from our French friends. Oui, you can live somewhere for years, speak the language and know your neighbourhood, but I think you really get to know a country when you go through the health system.

After a series of near misses, St Andrew's College finally claimed their maiden Kate Russell All-Ireland Schoolgirl's Championship, disposing of title holders Colaiste Iognaid 3-1 in the final at Dangan yesterday.
