A ho-ho-hum as RTE's 'cracking' festive schedule is a real turkey

Friday December 04 2009

LAST night I dreamt that TV3's Christmas highlight would be a panto featuring Bill Cullen as Scrooge, Jackie Lavin as the Widow Twanky and Vincent Browne as the Wicked Curmudgeon of the West, with TG4 showcasing Daithi O Se as Puss in Boots along with a chorus line of minority-language weather babes -- both of which sounds more fun than the "cracking Christmas schedule" just announced by RTE.

This was a rant just waiting to happen

Saturday November 14 2009

Alan O'Brien's tirade from the audience on last Monday's edition of The Frontline (RTE1) was an outburst waiting to happen, and I'm only surprised such an expression of fury at the salaries of top broadcasters hadn't occurred sooner -- on Pat Kenny's morning radio programme, say, or the Marian Finucane Show or Joe Duffy's Liveline: three formats that invite people to speak their minds.

Pulling viewers' strings

Saturday November 07 2009

It's 20 years since Dustin the Turkey first sidled on to The Den, having been won by Zag as a booby prize in a golf tournament. Zig and Zag were unimpressed with the talkative and ghoulish-looking bird, and intended to eat him for their Christmas dinner. It will cater instead to listeners aged 25-44, a move criticised last Thursday by its competitors.

Rose of Tralee host Ray D'Arcy poses with this year's contestants at the introduction of the 50 Roses at RTE HQ in Donnybrook, Dublin.

Wednesday August 19 2009

GOOD boy, well done. Rose of Tralee host Ray D'Arcy is hoping that legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne's familiar refrain will be ringing in his ears when he steps down from the stage after presenting the event's anniversary special next week.

Why Miriam is primed to do more on radio

SHE is the glamorous face of RTE's flagship current affairs television show but Miriam O'Callaghan has hinted she feels more at home on radio.

Morah Ryan proves there’s life after Gerry

Sunday July 26 2009

‘It's important to hang in there. It gets better." They were the brave words from Morah Ryan as she spoke openly for the first time about getting over her split from husband of 26 years Gerry Ryan.

She's single and happy, turning 50 -- but looking 25: Morah proves there's life after Gerry

Sunday July 26 2009

For years Morah and Gerry were a double act on Dublin's social scene. Her daily doing, whether it was mundane household matters or attending a glittering premier, became charming anecdotes for her husband's top-rated morning radio programme.
