This was a rant just waiting to happen

Saturday November 14 2009

Alan O'Brien's tirade from the audience on last Monday's edition of The Frontline (RTE1) was an outburst waiting to happen, and I'm only surprised such an expression of fury at the salaries of top broadcasters hadn't occurred sooner -- on Pat Kenny's morning radio programme, say, or the Marian Finucane Show or Joe Duffy's Liveline: three formats that invite people to speak their minds.

Pulling viewers' strings

Saturday November 07 2009

It's 20 years since Dustin the Turkey first sidled on to The Den, having been won by Zag as a booby prize in a golf tournament. Zig and Zag were unimpressed with the talkative and ghoulish-looking bird, and intended to eat him for their Christmas dinner. But for better or worse Dustin survived, after a helpful guest pointed out that he was part vulture and as such unfit for consumption. And as the TV seasons passed, the insidious bird moved to centre stage.

Same old voices and choices as RTE plays it safe

There was not a bikini-clad model in sight. Maybe that is why Joe Duffy was also absent. No scandal. Unless you count the new profile of Radio 2FM, which is abandoning 15-34 year olds as recession bites. It will cater instead to listeners aged 25-44, a move criticised last Thursday by its competitors.

Ghost of Gaybo terrifies Rose host Ray

Wednesday August 19 2009

GOOD boy, well done. Rose of Tralee host Ray D'Arcy is hoping that legendary broadcaster Gay Byrne's familiar refrain will be ringing in his ears when he steps down from the stage after presenting the event's anniversary special next week.

SHE is the glamorous face of RTE's flagship current affairs television show but Miriam O'Callaghan has hinted she feels more at home on radio.

Morah Ryan proves there’s life after Gerry

Sunday July 26 2009

‘It's important to hang in there. It gets better." They were the brave words from Morah Ryan as she spoke openly for the first time about getting over her split from husband of 26 years Gerry Ryan.

She's single and happy, turning 50 -- but looking 25: Morah proves there's life after Gerry

Sunday July 26 2009

For years Morah and Gerry were a double act on Dublin's social scene. Her daily doing, whether it was mundane household matters or attending a glittering premier, became charming anecdotes for her husband's top-rated morning radio programme.

Truth about Jacko, from his kids

Sunday July 12 2009

TOM Wolfe couldn't have made up Wacko Jacko's memorial service. The surreal nature of it all kicked off when they announced on Drivetime on RTE Radio that Marty Whelan would be presenting it. "Wow", a nation thought, "Marty's a dark horse. We didn't even know he was in with the Jacksons." It turned out that Marty was just presenting it for RTE, interjecting now and then to comment that it was all a bit like an Irish funeral, or to admit that this might be a very African American-centred remembrance of Michael Jackson.

Out of step with the Jacko love-in

Saturday July 11 2009

At Tuesday's memorial concert for Michael Jackson, Motown founder Berry Gordy described his former employee as "the greatest entertainer that ever lived", a judgment clearly endorsed by all those television channels which opted to jettison normal programming in order to accommodate live coverage of this funereal love-in to a dead singer.

The king is dead! Long live the new, improved 'Obama of pop'

Michael Jackson's impossible life morphed into an amazing afterlife sometime during the memorial service at Los Angeles's Staples Centre this week. "He is simply the best entertainer who ever lived," said Berry Gordy, and he should know.
