THE success of the hit film 'Billy Elliot' may have influenced some of Ireland's young male ballet stars, but the girls are still one step ahead. At a rehearsal of the Irish National Youth Ballet Company for its upcoming performance of 'The Nutcracker', which will open at the O'Reilly Theatre in Belvedere College on Friday, the three boys in attendance were still outnumbered 4:1 by girls.

An exhibition of Irish ballet during the period 1927 to 1963 opened at the Dance House in Temple Bar last night and will run to late January. It is the brainchild of Victoria O'Brien, who has done a great deal of research into Irish ballet and has put together a show which focuses on three specific periods.
