Keira Knightley may be a star of the big screen but she is not a fan of the small screen it seems after revealing she has not owned a television for five years.

The 26-year-old actress, who began her acting career as a six-year-old with a number of minor television roles, said she became tired of the constant diet of “mindless” programmes and reality television shows.

Knightley, whose latest film role sees her play a young psychiatric patient in David Cronenberg’s In A Dangerous Method, said the only things she really missed were documentaries and football.

But she explained that she now goes to the pub if she wants to watch a big game.

She told The Sun her reasons for deciding to give up her TV: “I didn’t really like it. I wasn’t really interested in what was on it.

“There are some wonderful TV dramas and I love documentaries and football but I’m not really interested in reality television or home improvement or game shows and I’m not really interested in a s*** load of adverts.

“So I realised that hours of my life were going by watching mindless stuff when I wondered what I could do with my life if I didn't watch TV for four hours a night.”

She added: “What’s amazing is that I haven’t had a TV for five years and I haven’t missed it at all.”

Knightley said she still watches a lot of films at home, but uses a DVD player and projector for home entertainment.

Her latest film also stars Michael Fassbender, who plays the Swiss founder of modern psychology Carl Jung.

Knightley plays a young patient who gets a sexual thrill from being spanked.

She has admitted being extremely uncertain about accepting the role but later relented after speaking to the director Cronenberg, who eventually persuaded her.
