Florida highway pile-up kills ten people
At least ten people have been killed in a multi-vehicle crash involving cars and trucks on a highway in the US state of Florida.
The mangled and burnt-out wreckage of twelve cars and six trucks are all that remains after a pile-up which happened just before dawn on US Interstate 75 near the city of Gainesville in northern Florida.
At least ten people were killed in the accident and another eighteen injured.
A combination of smoke and early morning mist is believed to have caused the crash on the north and southbound sides of the carriageway.
The first rescuers at the scene said they could only hear screams because of the smoke from nearby bush fires - believed to have been started intentionally - caused such poor visibility.
According to the police, wreckage was strewn for nearly a mile along the stetch of the six-lane highway which runs virtually the entire length of Florida.
