Brit awards : James Corden 'furious' at stopping Adele mid-flow

THE host of the Brit awards has told how he felt 'furious' after being asked to cut short Adele's acceptance speech at the ceremony.

James Corden has expressed his disbelief at being asked to cut Brit award-winner Adele off mid-flow at the ceremony.

The host of the evening said at London's O2: "I can't believe that's what they were asking me to do. I delayed for 15 seconds. They wanted to cut her short as time was running out."

Speaking after the awards Corden said: "I was furious and put in a horrible position. I went straight to Adele's dressing room and she was fine with me, but really upset. She had a speech and had a list of people she wanted to thank."

Corden stopped the singer-songwriter's speech after being told to do so by ITV bosses as time for the live broadcast was running out. Adele was picking up her second award of the night, for best album.

After being moved off stage the singer gestured with her middle finger in frustration on-stage.

Afterwards Adele, 23, said the insult was aimed at "the suits".

Corden said: "It would have been a wonderful TV moment for Adele to have her real moment in the sun and then Blur come on."

Blur's Damon Albarn had earlier delivered a rambling acceptance speech for his band's Outstanding Contribution prize.

James added: "I was so upset and can understand why Adele was. I didn't even watch Blur, one of my favourite bands.

Following the ceremony at London's O2 Arena, the show's organisers released a statement saying: "We regret this happened and we send our deepest apologies to Adele that her big moment was cut short due to the live show over running."

Adele's success followed a colossal win at the Grammys a little over a week ago when she was the toast of the music world with six trophies.

As she collected the best album prize for 21 - which has sold almost four million copies in the UK - the breathless star gushed: "Nothing makes me prouder, yeah, than coming home with six Grammys, then coming to the Brits and winning album of the year."

But seconds later Corden had to apologise as he forced her triumphant speech to end in a whimper. The star - who made a show-stopping comeback performance with hit Rolling In The Deep earlier in the show - then made her rude gesture.

ITV, who broadcast last night's event, also offered its apologies to the British singer after the show. A spokesman for the network said: "The Brits is a live event. Unfortunately the programme was overrunning and we had to move on. We would like to apologise to Adele for the interruption."

Ed Sheeran was the night's other double winner, taking home best British male solo artist and best British breakthrough.

Sheeran built his fanbase as an unsigned act via Facebook and YouTube and scored a major hit with The A Team, the acoustic song he recorded in a student flat and put out with a video he made for under £20.

Coldplay opened the show and were later named best British group.

Best British single – the only award of the night chosen by a public vote – went to What Makes You Beautiful by X Factor boyband One Direction.

The international awards went to Bruno Mars (best male), Rihanna (best female) and Foo Fighters (best group). Lana Del Rey won best international breakthrough act.

Emeli Sande took home the Critics’ Choice award, which marks out an artist tipped for success in 2012.
