• Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore has defended the government's decision to cut special payments to poor families on occasions such as First Holy Communion and confirmation. Will the clothes allowance paid to the spouses of ministers travelling abroad so they can dress properly for the occasion also be abolished?
State we are in
• The Polish interview of February 2 left me speechless. It was about a polish woman getting welfare in Ireland and also looking for a job.
Missing Cowen
• In a way, I miss Brian Cowen, or more accurately, the Cowen years. You see, back then, in the days of wine and roses, we really thought we were something. Now, we are sobering up to the awful truth that we have lived with for centuries: we are servile also-rans hanging on to the rocky outcrop at the end of the garden of the house of Europe.
