This recession can be characterised in one simple sentence: when the eating had to stop. The last few weeks have seen the custom in restaurants throughout the country collapse. We know building stopped 18 months ago, retail has been in trouble for the last year and air travel's problems started over the summer months. But the restaurants took the shock in the last fortnight.

Oldest woman defeats Everest again

Watanabe reached the summit from the Tibetan side on 19 May, at the age of 73 years and 180 days. That day, more than 200 climbers were aiming for the summit on the busier southern route in Nepal. Four died, apparently from altitude sickness and exhaustion, on one of the deadliest days on the mountain.
