Section 1: Operational questions

1. How do you download and install the app?

Go to http://www.independent.ie/ and select the link 'apps' in the footer. This will bring you to iTunes.

Select the option 'View in itunes', the download and install.

 

2.How to set up an itunes account

You can set up a new itunes account  by visiting www.apple.com/ie/
Select the tab 'itunes'
Select the option 'Download Now'


Once selected you will be asked to enter a valid email address and agree to terms and conditions. The software will then download.

 

3. How does Newsstand work

Apple Newsstand is a built-in application available on Apple touch screen devices. It is dedicated to downloading and displaying digital versions of newspapers and magazines. It emulates a newsagents shop with virtual shelves that hold and present each newspaper and magazine that has been downloaded in view and read, in one place. The app icon updates with the latest front covers with a notification indicator of new editions. Newsstand essentially operates as a folder for containing any downloaded digital magazines, newspapers or periodicals. It allows easy access to digital editions that a user may subscribe to by containing them in one location on the customers ipad. Newsstand will automatically download the new editions of each publication when one is updated.

To ensure Newsstand downloads the latest editions each day:

 - Ensure Wi-Fi is switched on

- When you open the app for the first time, click on OK when the pop up appears asking you to accept push notifications

- Automatic downloads are turned on by going to Settings on your device, finding the Newsstand icon in the left-hand column and turning the button next to your chosen publication to On

 

4. How to upgrade your iPad software

Updating iPad software is simple and extremely user friendly. Users are alerted to updates via notifications in Newsstand or from your ipad internal system. These updates can be actioned by visiting http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4623, the site includes visual demonstrations and step by step instructions

Users are alerted to the availability of updated versions of downloaded applications, updates are installed automatically on your ipad.

On your iPad, go to Settings, General and then Software Update. You will then be prompted to Download and install the latest update. This can take up to 10 minutes, depending on the speed of your internet connection.

 

5.How do I access the epaper/magazines in current edition?

To access the epaper/magazines in current edition go to the Menu icon in the app. The magazines/epaper are shown in the 2nd column.

6. How do I access the epaper/Magazines I have previously downloaded and saved?

App Editions including epapers and magazines from the last 14 days are accessible by clicking on the ‘Archive’ button in the App. Go to the Main app menu and ‘Archive’ is available in the right hand column.

7. Does the issue expire?

8.How do I do the crosswords/puzzles?

Puzzles/crosswords are navigated using the touch screen and keyboard features. Users may also use the 'pencil' feature to enter answers.

9.How do I stop push Notifications?

To adjust Push Notifications settings; from the Home page, select ‘Settings‘ > ‘Notifications‘. From here the notifications can enabled/disabled.

 

Turn off all push notifications

a. Go to your iPad settings by touching the Settings icon on your iPad's display. This is the icon that looks like gears.

b. This will take you to a screen with a list of settings on the left side. Notifications are near the top, just under the Wi-Fi settings.

c. Once you choose the Notifications setting, you can turn off push notifications by touching to the right of the word "On". You can flip notifications from off back to on by touching to the left of the word "Off".

 

Turn Off Push Notifications For Individual Apps:

a. Follow the steps above to get to the Notification settings. You should reach a screen similar to the one shown above.

b. When Push Notifications are turned on, each individual app you have installed that uses push notifications will be listed on the right side of the screen.

c. Touch the app name to modify the app's push notification settings.

d. From this screen, you can turn off Sounds, Alerts and/or Badges. Sounds is the plopping sound a push notification makes, alerts are the small message the pops up on the screen, and badges are the numbers that appear on the app's icon, such as the iPad Mail icon showing the number four when you have four unread emails.

 

10.How do I switch off auto-rotate?

Disabling the ipad auto-rotate function can be done in the tablets settings. It is listed as a general setting. If you have difficulties with this please go to http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4085

 

11.Can I save stories to read them later?

As with the archived issues the individual stories will be available for a period of 14 days

 

12. How do I share an article with Facebook, Twitter etc?

The sharing icon is an arrow on the top right of an article page. If you click on this icon you should see an option to share it with Facebook/Twitter  etc. If these options don’t appear please check the following

  1. Facebook/Twitter are installed on your ipad.
  2. You are logged into Facebook/Twitter.
  3. If you are on iOS 7 go to  the ‘Settings’ menu on the ipad. The select the required Twitter/Facebook option from the list of programs. Log in.
  4. Return to the story and you should now see the Facebook/Twitter sharing options when you click on the share icon.

 

Section 2: Subscription Questions

13. How do I stop the automatic renewal?

To turn off the automatic renewal setting you must first access your app subscriptions, the following steps must then be taken:

a. From your device's Home screen, tap App Store.

b. Tap Featured at the bottom of the screen.

c. Scroll to the bottom of the page.

d. Tap the Apple ID button in the lower-left corner. (If you are not signed in, tap the Sign In button, and sign in with your Apple ID. Then, scroll back to the bottom of the page, and tap the Apple ID button.)

e. Tap the View Apple ID button.

f. Enter your password and tap OK.

g. From the main account page, scroll down and tap Manage App Subscriptions. If you don't have app subscriptions this button will not be displayed. You'll then be taken to your App Subscriptions page.

h. From your Manage App Subscription page, choose an app subscription.  

i. Tap the subscription category for which you want to disable auto-renewal. 

j. Tap On to toggle the switch to Off.

k. You will receive a confirmation message; tap OFF to confirm your selection.

14.How do I change my credit card details in my iTunes account?

By following the below steps payment information can be easily changed, alternatively these instructions can be viewed at visit http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1918

 

Changing your payment information using an IOS device:

a. Tap settings on the Home screen

b. Tap iTunes and APP Stores

c. Tap your Apple ID (If you aren’t signed in enter your apple ID and password and tap Sign In)

d. Tap View Apple ID

e. Enter your Apple ID password

f. In the Edit section, tap payment information.

g. Update the information you want to change.

h. Tap done when you are finished.

15.Can I share the subscription with anyone else?

No. A subscription to any publication can only be accessed by one user.

16. Can I share individual articles?

Yes, you can share articles by clicking on the share icon in the article. They will link to the corresponding article on the website so others can read the article even if they do not have the ipad edition.

17.I already have an epaper subscription. Do I have to pay again to get the app?

Yes. These subscriptions are completely separate.

18. What is the difference between the iPad and the website?

There is additional editorial content contained on the ipad version, including articles, comment sections, crosswords and puzzles.

19. How often is the content updated?

The content is updated at least once a day, however sometimes breaking stories may be updated more frequently.

20. Will it cost more money to download the content daily when I'm on Holiday?

All download costs will be entirely dependent on your operator's charges. You will need to consult them directly as roaming charges will apply and vary greatly between provider.

Section 3: Problems

21. The latest edition of the app is not showing?

There are several possible solutions to this problem outlined below; alternatively please go to http://www.apple.com/uk/support/ipad/assistant/application/#section_1

 

i). Verify IOS requirements:

a.Make sure the app is compatible with your iPad software. The app is optimised to run on iOS6 and iOS7

b.Check the requirements in the App Store

c.Check your IOS version using Setting> General>About

d. If the app requires a newer version of the iOS than the one you are using, update iOS on your iPad.

 

ii). Update apps

a.See if there is an updated version of the app on your iPad.

b.Open the App Store and tap Updates. If updates are available, tap Update All.iPad will then download and install the app updates.

c.If prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information.

 

iii). Close App

a.If only a single app has stopped responding or closes on launch, try the following:

b.Return to the Home screen, and then click the Home button twice.

c.Tap and hold on the app.

d.When it starts to jiggle, tap the icon to close it

e.Double-click the Home button and try opening the app again

 

iv). Restart iPad

a.To restart iPad, first turn iPad off by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until a red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider and iPad will turn off after a few moments.

b.Next, turn iPad on by pressing and holding the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears

 

v). Remove app

a.If you are having issues with a particular app, try removing and reinstalling the app on your iPad.To avoid losing any app data, first back up your information.

b.Touch and hold any app icon on the Home screen until the icons start to jiggle.

c.Tap the "x" in the corner of the app you want to remove. You may be prompted to rate the app.

d.Tap Delete to remove the app and all of its data from your iPad.

e.Click the Home button to cancel or stop deleting apps.

f.Proceed to the next step to reinstall your app

g.Reinstall app

 

vi).After removing an app from your iPad, use these steps to reinstall it.

a.Open the App Store on iPad and locate the app to reinstall. If you previously purchased the app, tap Purchased to find it quickly, then tap the install button.If prompted, enter your iTunes Store account information.

b.After the app is installed, check to see if your issue is resolved.

 

22.Cannot connect to the internet?

Queries of this nature need to be resolved via your iPad settings, various different problems may have occurred and a number of different solutions can be attempted.

23.There are no pictures showing

This problem is related to the speed of the wi-fi connection. Generally the pictures will eventually populate given time, however disconnecting from the Wi-Fi in your settings and reconnecting will more than likely resolve the problem. Alternatively restarting your device will have the same effect.

 

24. I purchased a subscription but I can’t see the icon on my screen?

If you have successfully purchased a subscription but the icon is not appearing on your ipad: follow the instructions below:

 

When apps are purchased from the iTunes Store using iTunes, they are downloaded to the Apps section of your iTunes library as shown below. In order to sync the app to your iPad or iPod touch, the apps need to show up in iTunes. You can view the apps in iTunes by clicking on Apps in the left-hand column.

 

Syncing apps purchased in iTunes to iPhone, iPad or iPod touch

a.Connect your iPad or iPod touch to your computer or via Wi-Fi and open iTunes.

b.Select your device in the left hand column

c.Click the Apps tab and check 'Sync Apps'.

d.Select the apps you want to sync in the left-hand column.

e.When using iOS 4 or later, you can organize your apps into folders using iTunes.

f.When you are satisfied with your changes, click Sync to transfer the apps you selected to your device.

g.They will now appear on your iPad.

 

25. How do I remove an app from my screen?

To remove an app from your screen, hold your finger across the icon until it starts to vibrate/wriggle, an 'x' will populate in the top right of the icon, by tapping the x the icon will be removed from your screen.

 

26. My app won't install?

If an app will not install on your ipad it may be due to software restrictions as the app is compatible with iOS 6 and iOS 7.. You must upgrade to install. (see Section 1: 'How to upgrade your software')

27.The app takes ages to install

The time it takes an application to install will be entirely dependent on wi-fi speed and the size of the publication.

28.My edition is missing pages near the end

In this instance the download is incomplete – by starting the download process again the problem will be corrected.
