An emotional performance by the father of the bride ended in a standing ovation from guests at an Irish wedding last weekend, who were touched by a tune sang to bless the new couple.

In lieu of a long-winded speech, Gerry Smith sang country music favourite God’s Plan at the top table at the wedding of his daughter Geraldine Smith, who married Michael Cooke in Italy last Friday.

The couple, from Cavan, wed in Borgo di Tragliata, just outside Rome.

As Gerry sang the last verse, his song was met with a raucous applause from the wedding’s guests, who rose to their feet to praise him.
