US superstar Jennifer Hudson opened up about her nine year engagement to fiancé David Otunga on The Ellen Show, explaining she was "not in a rush" to tie the knot.

The Dreamgirls star, who found fame in season 3 of American Idol, told US chat show host Ellen that she was happy to wait to marry former professional wrestler David Otunga despite the couple's long engagement, saying "he ain't going nowhere."

The Voice UK coach and her fiancé David, who is a Harvard grad and occasionally practises law, welcomed the arrival of their son David Daniel Otunga, Jr. in August 2009.

Jennifer (39) told ITV's Loose Women earlier this year that she believed everything "is about timing" and said she was not being pressured by her young son to tie the knot as "we're still a family... no-one really knows any different."

"I'm here because I want to be, I'm not here because I have to be," the star continued. Speaking about what happens when something "goes wrong" with couples who get married after years together, she said "as soon as we have to do something, we don't wanna do it no more!"

Tragedy

The couple were struck by a huge tragedy shortly after their engagement in 2008, when Jennifer's mother and brother were discovered dead in their Chicago home. Her seven-year-old nephew was later found murdered in the back seat of a car.

The singer and actress revealed in an interview with Ebony magazine that the reason she was not in her family home at the time of the tragedy was due to the fact that she had travelled to Tampa in Florida to visit her WWE star fiancé.

“That’s one of the things that saved my life, because I could have been home with my mom then,” she said in an interview with US glossy Ebony. “[David] wanted me to come out to Florida with him instead of going to Chicago.”

The star's former brother-in-law William Balfour was convicted of three accounts of first degree murder in 2012 and sentenced to life in prison.

When asked was she "happy in love" by Ellen, the Oscar-winner simply responded "yes".
