Eat, Pray, Love author Elizabeth Gilbert celebrates 'ceremony of love' with terminally ill girlfriend

American author and partner enjoy "simple and spontaneous" ceremony surrounded by close friends and family

She gained world-wide fame for her memoir Eat, Pray, Love in 2006, in which she documented her soul-searching travels across Italy, Indonesia and Bali and author Elizabeth GIlbert continues to share her life's ups and downs with fans through her books and through her social media channels.

The best-selling author took to Instagram to share some special news this week, announcing that she and partner Rayya Elias had celebrated a "precious and perfect" day when they participated in an intimate "ceremony of love" in Manhattan.

Author Elizabeth, whose book spent 150 weeks on the New York Times best seller list and was later turned into a movie starring Julia Roberts, announced she and Syrian-born hair stylist Rayya were an item nine months ago.

The couple have been through some tough times times in their time together, with Syria-born hair stylist, filmmaker and author Rayya battling terminal cancer.

"Over the last year, Rayya Elias and I have been through some really difficult days together — but not today. Today was precious and perfect. A simple and spontaneous ceremony of love, surrounded by a small handful of friends and family," the author captioned her intimate photo.

"Our ceremony was nothing legally binding (no need to alert the authorities, folks!)..." she continued, "just a quiet and private celebration of what we have long known to be true: We belong to each other.

"More difficult days are to come. It doesn't get easier from here. Her illness is grave. But our love is strong. We will walk together as far as we can go together. After that, it all gets turned over to God.

"Create beauty with every day you are given."
