The pair, who have been together for more than six years, walked up the aisle on Friday at Camden Fort Meagher in Crosshaven.

Valerie, who is considered one of the most successful female sports stars in the country with an impressive nine All-Ireland successes to her name, exchanged vows with the choreographer in an intimate ceremony attended by family and friends.

"I don't want to go to sleep as I want the best day of my life a bit longer #ValandMeg15. Love my wife," Valerie tweeted, sharing a picture of the newly married couple.

The sun was shining on the picturesque coastal setting, with many, including Meg, proudly documenting many moments of the big day on Instagram.

The couple became engaged last year and decided to go ahead with their wedding after the same sex marriage referendum passed, explaining that they "will just go ahead with the wedding and we can apply for our license" when the legislation is in place.

It was a case of "opposites attract" when the pair first met, with Meg admitting she'd never even seen a ladies football match before meeting her other half.

"I had never seen a ladies football match, I didn't even know it existed," she explained earlier this month to RSVP Magazine.

"Meg had no idea that I played football but when she found out she was very supportive and now she's a big fan," Valerie added.

Meg and Valerie say that children are high on their agenda after the wedding, but are currently happy with their two lizards and four cats.

Valerie offered the following advice to anyone struggling to come to terms with their sexuality.

"In the short term it might be hard but the long term benefit will be worth it. There's help out there and people out there that have gone through what you are going through. Reach out," she said.

"I'm happy being a gay person now. You turn a corner and you are proud of who you are."
