Asking someone how many partners they've slept with is a very personal question. Should you ever disclose the information?

If you're in a serious relationship you probably will reveal the answer.

And researchers have claimed that ten is the ideal number of lovers to have had for both men and women.

Between eight and 12 was the most popular answer, chosen by 38pc of women and 37pc of men.

Within that group, both men and women agreed 10 was the "Goldilocks" answer - "neither too hot nor too cold".

More than 1,000 people took part in the online survey for British extra-marital dating site IllicitEncouters.com, being asked how many lovers they would want a new partner to have had.

The poll suggests those who had more than 10 sexual partners were considered promisculous, while having fewer than 10 would be considered sexually inexperienced.

It was also revealed that any more than 20 would be a big turn-off to both men and women.

When it comes to disclosing information of such an intimate nature, 35pc of women said they would would want to know their partner's sexual history, while only 30pc of men agreed the same.
