Valentines Day 101: Irish people reveal their best and worst gifts
Note to all romantics; your other half will not be chuffed with the electric mixer you picked up as a Valentine’s Day gift.
Irish people have revealed the least appealing gifts they have ever received for Valentine’s Day and they include a wok, an electric mixer and chocolates long past their expiry date.
Over fifty per cent of couples reported household goods and petrol shop flowers among the presents they would least like to receive on the day of love, according to a survey by One4All.
On the other hand, dinner and drinks or a gift card to spend in their favourite store proved to be winners.
One person surveyed said the best present they ever got was ‘just a simple pot of yogurt, it was the thought that counted and it was my favourite one’.
More elaborate gestures included a Gucci watch, an Ireland rugby jersey and a weekend away in Spain.
But the majority of loved-up couples said they will be spending between €1 and €50 on their other half.
When asked about buying something new to wear on the day, over 80pc of the 2,500 One4All survey respondents said they wouldn’t, but if they were considering a new purchase, new underwear was the garment of choice for the majority of men and woman.
Finally, if you do feel like wooing someone on February 14, ‘Snookums’ has been voted Ireland’s most offensive pet name.
Instead, try the ever-popular ‘Babe’, ‘Honey’ or ‘Sexy’.
