Girls on film
The Killing of Sister George (1968)
Banned in Ireland, this was the first mainstream film to depict a lesbian love scene.
There were softcore erotic films before this but not an extended lesbian lovemaking scene like the one here between Mercy (Coral Browne) and Alice (Susannah York).
An otherwise boring art movie with David Bowie made memorable for its sex scenes featuring Susan Sarandon and Catherine Deneuve.
Deneuve plays a vampire who seduces Sarandon's character.
Henry And June
This film is a fairly explicit treatment of the diaries of Anais Nin and the romantic triangle Anais (Maria De Medeiros) had with American Tropic of Cancer author Henry Miller (Fred Ward), and his bisexual wife June (played by a then 19-year-old Uma Thurman).
It includes the fantasy sequence of Anais having sex with June.
This is an erotic lesbian thriller with Anne Heche playing a financial consultant by day and high-class call girl by night.
There's a pretty explicit love-making scene and the whole thing is given an added tension by the fact that you know Anne Heche came out and got together with Ellen DeGeneres after this.
Head in the Clouds
After winning best actress for Monster in 2004 Charlize Theron bucked convention by playing a free-spirited American heiress and photographer who has an affair with a Spanish model (Penelope Cruz). Pictured left.
