Alison & Tony
Today FM DJ Alison Curtis met her husband Tony Hegarty in 2002. They got engaged in March 2007 and married six months later.
"The whole idea of getting proposed to never even passed my mind. I never thought I would even get married. Tony and I moved in together in 2003, a year after we met, so things happened quite quickly. I had been teasing him about marriage for a long time, just asking him, 'Will you marry me?'.
"Then, one day, I was about to head to Austria with work and I was standing in between the kitchen and the living room. I asked again and, whatever way it came out, he took me seriously. So when he said yes, I said, 'Cool. You can choose the date so'.
We kept it secret for a few weeks, and when we were ready to go public we sent out our texts together, which was really cute.
"A few people thought I was joking when I said I'd done the proposing. I don't really care for tradition though; to me every couple is unique. We were in our own home and it was a private moment we both enjoyed.
"We got the engagement ring together, and after that we went for a drink to celebrate. So that was a nice moment to share.
"I never even called him my fiancée while we were engaged; in fact, I think I still called him my boyfriend a few weeks after we were married.
"I think a lot of women probably still hold out for the man to propose. It's a big deal; that's why Leap Year is probably such a big deal too.
"To me, other milestones and points are more important and let you know that you're in it for the long haul."
