Is there a better feeling than packing your bag for your summer holidays? I absolutely adore the excited anticipation of gorgeous, sun-soaked, beach days that lie ahead.

I am, however, a very bad packer. I am from the J.I.C. school of packing - the "just in case" style of baggage control whereby I essentially bring my entire wardrobe in the very unlikely chance that I may need any of it. The only time I ever packed smart was in my backpacking days, when the weight of my backpack dictated whether I could actually stand up straight and walk or not. Slowly but surely, I discarded most of my belongings along our backpacking travelling route and followed the sage advise of poet Antoine de Saint Exupery who said, "He who would travel happily, must travel light."

Nowadays I've got fancier again, and one thing I cannot leave behind are my favoured beauty products. However, that leaves me stuck between choosing to only bring 100ml of something in my hand luggage (see restrictions, right), or packing it into my case and praying it doesn't burst. I know that some women swear by buying all their toiletries once they arrive at their holiday destination and leaving them behind, but I can't get my head around that one. One really good option is to decant your products into mobile toiletry bottles (Try Go Travel airplane travel cabin bottles, €11.99 from Boots). Maybe an even better option is to bring some good quality, multi-tasking, hard-working travel size products that can double up for multiple uses for all the family?

Coconut oil can be used for taking off make-up, moisturising face and body, as a hair mask, shaving lotion, lip balm, after sun, even toothpaste if necessary… And you can eat it if you get peckish!

Vita Coco coconut oil, €17.99, supermarkets and health stores nationwide.

Eight of the best double-ups

Twin talents

These brilliantly priced travel options from DR HAUSCHKA are wonderful beauty multi-taskers. The Lemon Lemongrass Vitalising Body Oil (30ml) can be used as an after sun body moisturiser, eye make-up remover and hair mask.

The Soothing Cleansing Milk can be used as a face skin cleanser and also as shaving foam! Both €8.95 from chemists and health food stores nationwide.

Tender tresses

This gorgeous UV hair protector will also protect your hair from salt and chlorine water damage.

NUXE Sun moisturising protective milky oil for hair, multi-protection against UV, salt and chlorine water, €17.50, pharmacies nationwide.

Hair We Go!

Half your products by combining your shampoo and conditioner - a great one is Tresemmé Cleanse and Renew 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner, ¤7 (currently half price at ¤3.42 in Tesco).

Bask… then mask

Be kind to your skin on your holidays and replenish some of the moisture lost to the sun by smoothing on an after sun hydrating face and neck mask. Thalgo Sun Repair Cream Mask for face and neck, ¤22, pharmacies and select salons nationwide.

Sun, sea and (No) Sand?

This sand-repelling SPF is actually marketed for kids but I know a lot of adults with sand phobias who would love this little gem!

Garnier Ambre Solaire kids anti-sand SPF 50, €19.50

TIP: when buying SPF always look for the products with UVA and UVB and sometimes IR (infrared protection), this way you know it's the best quality product.

Sun Showers

Slip this gorgeous-smelling shower gel into your wash bag - the size is perfect for a week's holiday. Nature's Ingredients aloe vera shower gel, €2, Marks & Spencer

Bite back

If the mozzies love you, remember to bring insect repellent - this travel size option from Marks &Spencer is a trio of insect repellent, killer and soothing after-bite sprays. Formula insect bites travel pack, €10

Cheeks and lips

MAC Crème blend cream blush in Posey, €24, gives a really dewy, peachy rose glow to the face, but is equally gorgeous used as a lipstick - just mix with some Vaseline and blend over your pout. Available from MAC stores, BT2, and Brown Thomas nationwide.

You really have to massage this into your hair otherwise there's a white residue. I love this product but I think the only way to 100pc protect your hair and scalp is to cover up with a hat or scarf.

Make-up duplicates

We only need to pack a few multi-tasking, hard-working make-up items into our holiday bag that can double up for other uses

Contour, face and eyes

This bronzer can be used all over the face and neck to give your complexion a golden goddess glow. It can also be used as a contour powder and it's really gorgeous as an eye shadow! Catrice Sun Glow mineral bronzing powder, €5.50, Penneys and pharmacies nationwide.

It's no surprise that studies have shown the one make-up item the majority of women could never give up, is mascara! Try Flormar Revolution Waterproof Mascara, €8.95, in pharmacies nationwide or dab some Vaseline on your lashes for natural lengthening and definition.
