Kate Middleton and Prince William have revealed the name of their newborn princess, whom they welcomed to the world on Saturday.
Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana was chosen as the name for the princess.
It was expected that William would make some reference to his late mother, who died following a car accident in Paris in August 1997.
Her name also honours his grandmother, the Queen.
The baby girl was born on Saturday morning at 8.34am, weighing 8lbs 3oz.
Kensington Palace said in a short statement: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to announce that they have named their daughter Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.
"The baby will be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge."
While the princess made her public debut as her parents left the Lindo Wing of London’s St Mary’s Hospital, her name was only revealed today.
A source revealed to the Mail Online that William and Kate had named their new arrival over the weekend, but were only happy to reveal it after they had spoken to the Queen.
While there is no protocol stating that the monarch should be consulted about the name of a newborn, William reportedly felt it would be wrong to tell the public before his own grandmother.
“The Queen and her grandson have grown exceptionally close in recent years and he trusts her judgement implicitly,” the insider said.
Princess Charlotte might only have arrived two days ago, but she’s already pipped to be a huge money maker when it comes to the British economy.
It's thought the newborn will help rake in an estimated €2.2m each year, giving the UK economy a €1bn boost by her fifth birthday.
The little Princess is expected to draw 32 million tourists to London throughout the next five years and her birth has been hailed as “significant” by the Centre for Retail Research in the UK.
A Kensington Palace spokesman has said Kate and William "are hugely grateful for the messages of congratulations they have received from people all over the world.
"It means a great deal to them that so many people have celebrated the arrival of their new daughter."
