You can usually rely on the Grammys for all manner of outrageous red carpet looks but this year was surprisingly sedate - apart from Lady Gaga.

  • Go To

Although she has been sporting a somewhat more demure look of late (remember her sensational black dress and peroxide Marilyn hair combo at the Golden Globes?), she reverted to her trademark outrageous self for the Grammys.

We saw echoes of it at the Super Bowl last week when she wore a red sequin suit with matching eyeshadow and towering blonde hair.

And she took that look to the next level for the Grammys with a custom Marc Jacobs electric blue full length coat dress adorned with sparkly embellishment and teamed with her trademark towering platforms.

Once again she sported sparkly eyeshadow - this time blue - and wore a flame red wig.

Given she's performing a tribute to the late great David Bowie, her red carpet costume was more than befitting of the occasion.

It's a pity there wasn't a bit more crazy on the red carpet - most of the bigger stars played it safe.

Here are some of the best and worst on the night:

Selena Gomez nails it - the colour, the texture the fit are all sublime.

Deceptively plain from the front, when Ellie Goulding turned around the full impact can be seen...

...gorgeous.

Pushing the boat out in a sea of mediocrity is Janelle Monae who looked like she was dressed for the Grammys red carpet as opposed to the more bland awards ceremonies.

The colour is beautiful but the jury's out on this one - not her best look.

There's a law that somebody must be semi-naked and Manika was happy to oblige...

... but she wasn't the only one.

We commend Jacqueline Van Bierk for bringing a bit more crazy.

Although Dencia may have taken it too far in her pink onesie.

Ciara wins Highest Thigh High Split of the Night.

Florence Welch looked decidedly Florence Welch in Gucci.  She'll divide opinion but at least she provided a welcome break from the myriad of black gowns and trouser suits.

Speaking of black, if you're going to do it you might as well be a supermodel.  Bella Hadid looks sensational.

Kaley Cuoco's sparkly jumpsuit teamed with bronzed skin and tousled crop was simple but stunning.

We're awarding Most Stylish Couple to Chrissy Tiegen and John Legend.  Just look at them!
