Hip lip: Triona McCarthy on how to get luscious lips
Published 23/05/2016 | 02:30
From the longest lashes to the most luscious lips, sprinkled liberally with a few insider tips, our pouty-mouth missy, Triona McCarthy, has got you covered!
The 'hip lip' to have this summer is bold and bright. Unapologetically girly lip shades of cerise pink and crazy coral dominated this season's catwalks.
The juxtaposition of strong lips and girly garments gives a gal a great quirky coolness. What's neither quirky nor cool is attempting this look and ending up with a messy mouth!
To learn how to avoid potential product potholes, I talked to make-up maestro Sarah Jane Lanagan, see sarahlanagan.com, who made up my mush for this week's main photo, above.
I love Sarah Jane's modern, clean, yet dramatic make-up look. No Triona the Transvestite here!
A statement mouth, Sarah told me, is only as good as its application, so naturally you'll want to avoid the awful "bleeding lipstick" lines.
Prepping is very important, so lash on that old reliable, Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream, above, €35, and, if needs be, exfoliate your lips with a toothbrush.
Then line and fill in your lips with a pencil that matches the lipstick.
Sarah used the Urban Decay Limited edition Gwen Stefani lip pencil in Firebird, left, €23. You can use it on its own all over the lip if you'd like a matte lip, but Sarah used it as a liner and paired it with Too Faced's Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Fuchsia, below, €23. I absolutely adore it, and have made it my signature lip colour for summer 2016. It doesn't budge, yet it feels really comfy on.
Repeat after me: a headstand a day keeps the doctor away! I'm serious!
As a child, I spent years doing gymnastics, and know the benefits of a headstand. The blood-rush to your head jump-starts your circulation, opens your chakras (man) and helps cleanse your lymphatic system for improved immunity. #headcase
Take a chance on this
I heart Chanel. I honestly don't think my day could go wrong if it begins with a little Chanel!
Chanel has never disappointed me.
Their skincare is innovative, and results-driven, while the make-up products constantly gain cult status in no time, and what gal doesn't love a Chanel fragrance, eh?
Chance, which means 'luck' in French, is Chanel's only fragrance housed in a round bottle, as it symbolises a wheel of chance. A friend of mine claims it's her 'lucky scent'! Anyhoo, Chanel Chance Eau Vive Hair Mist, above, €41, is my new fave fragrance. The fresh, floral scent makes my hair smell divine, and it's also great to pop in your bag - just spritz away to instantly refresh your hair post-dinner date - or next morning, if you're doing a 'stride of pride' because you got lucky, the night before!
Shhhhh! I want to tell you a secret. Right so, are you ready? Well, see my nails in my pic?
They are all glossy and groomed, looking how I imagine Dita Von Teese, above - always has hers.
Well, they were done nearly three weeks ago. They're Bio Sculpture, €49, which is kind of the granny of Shellac-style manicures, and they still use it in Nails Inc in Brown Thomas, but only if you ask! You see, Bio Sculpture is slightly thicker and it really lasts and moves with your nails - perfect if yours are as weak as mine are.
The trend now is for a two-week mani, which is just a polish with a gel topcoat, but a Bio Sculpture mani is the business altogether, and lasts longer - at least three weeks. Trust me! Now, don't tell anyone, it's our little secret!
Triona's most wanted
Oh the lols I had when this landed on my desk!
Better Than Sex, above, €23, is the bestselling mascara from Too Faced, which is available at Debenhams. It's a celebrity and make-up artist favourite, with fans including Kylie Jenner, and uber MUA, Val Garland.
The true-black, volumising, lengthening and thickening mascara definitely gives me the best lashes, but I can't say they're better than sex, in fairness!
The smudge-proof finish lasts all day, while the unique, tapered wand features compact bristles, which evenly coat every lash from root to tip. But no matter how amazing a mascara is, you need to know how to apply it correctly. So let me wave my magic mascara wand and show you how to create long, luscious lashes.
Always curl your lashes first to open up the eyes.
Technique-wise, I find that if I twirl my mascara wand as I apply mascara, it lengthens and separates my lashes at the same time.
Pay special attention to the outer lashes as well. This can make such a difference. Try it and see what I mean!
To set the curl; hold the wand and lashes together at the lash tips for several seconds. This allows the mascara to 'set'.
To avoid clumping, apply a second coat before the first coat dries.
Grainy, physical scrubs are a big no-no now in the beauty world, so Elizabeth Arden Skin Illuminating Retexturising Pads, above, €55, are my new obsesh.
They do exactly what it says on the tin. One swipe and they effectively retexturise and cleanse skin, promoting skin renewal.
I use them once or twice a week for a brighter, more radiant, even-toned complexion.
