The LWD (Little White Dress) is one of our favourite summer classics. Unlike the LBD (Little Black Dress) the LWD demands a more casual approach.
Look for styles with a slightly looser fit. Nothing too tailored or you risk an unsightly, 'underwear lines on show' situation. You want a shape that glances off the body rather than hugs it- see J-Mag here. She's styled it perfectly with a leather biker jacket and barely there nude sandals. Would work equally well with a pair of flat sandals for a barbecue.
I'm looking for a pair of culottes for the summer. I want them cropped, not full length, and ideally something I can wear both casually and dressed up.
Firstly, no matter how casually you're doing them, we would advise against a flat shoe. Culottes have the potential to be hugely unflattering and to give the illusion of wide hips. You need to wear some sort of a heel, even if it's a casual summer wedge. Our favourite way to do culottes is in a light, floaty fabric, and styled dressily. Warehouse has a pair of cream lace culottes, €84. What you're looking for are fabrics so light it's unclear whether you're wearing a skirt or culottes. This is less likely to make your hips look twice their normal size. Topshop has a pair in black with a very discreet white-daisy print. There is a box-pleat between the legs, which makes them look like a skirt. Of course discreet black is always a safe bet. Zara has a lovely plain pair with a tiny eyelet detail on the leg, €39.95.
