Q I'm going to the races soon and although I have been racing in the summer months I've never been in winter. I thought smart trousers, a shirt, a nice coat with a hat and gloves would work, what's your advice?'

A I'm not a fan of trousers at the races. Instead try tights, and over-the-knee boots with a knee-length coat so there are no bare legs on show. This is a modern way to stay warm with a high-fashion, military twist!

Karen Millen and Carl Scarpa have a good selection of such boots. Choose a beautiful coat in a bright colour to turn heads like FeeG's crimson military number which will add some festive cheer to your look, simply team with a long-sleeved black dress and add a smart trilby.

Brocade is a big trend this autumn so you could experiment with Darling's tapestry-inspired coat with some funky coloured tights to keep warm, Oasis has a good range. www.glovesbypaularowan.com has an excellent selection of gloves to finish off your outfit.
