Unless you have been out at sea for the past few months, you can’t have missed the strong nautical influence on the high street right now. Everywhere you look there are stripes and gold buttons, navy dresses and white shorts.

It’s a refreshing springtime look and one that has been around for a few years. So much detail may seem daunting, but if you keep it simple it is a lot of fun!

Stripes

The easiest way to work the nautical trend is simply to wear stripes.

The choice on the high street is endless, possibly even slightly overboard, forgive the pun! H&M’s new spring campaign ‘The Blues’ is heavily influenced by the nautical trend and stripes made strong appearances on the resort catwalks noticeably at Chanel and Marc Jacobs.

A stripy top with a pair of jeans is effortlessly chic and has been spotted on everyone from The Hills star Kristin Cavallari to supermodel Kate Moss. My favourite stripy tops are from New Look and River Island but this is a look you can pick up almost anywhere on any budget.

Long length navy and white T-shirts and tops can be worn with jeggings, leggings or skinny jeans. Navy, white, red and grey are all colours which work well together, so you’re sure to find the right combination of things to wear together.

Alternatively, if you think this look is too “sailor” for you, stick to black and white striped tops teamed with black or white jeans or jeggings.

Navy

This spring, being in the navy is right on trend. Alexa Chung wore a gorgeous navy sailor dress to the MTV U Woodie Awards. There are a number of similar high street ones. I am a fan of AWear’s collection including their Retro Stripe Dress for €45.

An ideal wardrobe staple is a navy jacket or blazer. Wear it with white jeans for a summer classic look. On the high street, Next have a great nautical jacket with gold buttons.

The newly opened Juicy Couture store in Kildare Village has a lovely cropped sleeve jacket and Burberry and Miu Miu have versions that will last you a lifetime.

Shorts

With summer approaching, nothing screams Riviera chic like white shorts, as seen on the Tommy Hilfiger catwalk. Urban Outfitters'

Johann Safari shorts with gold buttons are a great high street alternative at €50.

New Look and River Island also have a great collection with prices starting as low as €15.

Team your shorts with a loose top and flats for a comfortable holiday look (even if you’re at home!).

Bags

Beach chic has never been more fashionable! Rope strap bags are everywhere and great at adding fun and colour to an everyday look. Ben de Lisi has a striking red French Bulldog one in Debenhams at the moment which is a steal at €15.

For evening wear, Dune have it covered with their nautical clutch, priced €50.

Shoes

Office have a ship load of sailor shoes this season. My favourite are the Jersey/Achor small wedges with cute red anchor detail. These soft canvas shoes are both comfortable and stylish. See by Chloe have gorgeous wedges in a variety of nautical colours from Net-A-Porter and farfetch.com for approx €230. So this spring/summer, wear your stripes with pride and enjoy the nautical but nice trend. Ahoy sailor!
