What She Wears: Kaftans
The word ‘kaftan’ (beach cover-up) is quite new in fashion terminology, but it turns out that they’ve been wearing these long collarless tunics under coats in the Middle East for centuries.
It’s true that the early bird catches the worm, so if you want to impress with your Kaftan on your next holiday, read on to discover this year’s most stylish ones for every budget and taste.
The great thing about these beach cover-ups, is that you can wear them during the day and at night, so let your kaftan double up as an evening wear option, hence giving you more space in your suitcase for another pair of wedges or sandals.
Up there at the top is Roberto Cavalli, whose leopard print sheer kaftan is reduced from €975 to €245 on The Outnet. If your budget can’t stretch to Cavalli heights, Star by Julian Macdonald at Debenhams do a lovely chocolate brown leopard print version with embellished collar for €25. Leopard print is a perennial print that will always be on trend so it’s worth the purchase for the braver ladies amongst you.
This year Jenny Packham, the acclaimed bridal wear designer, produced a black chiffon kaftan with embellishment and fringing which could also be classed as evening wear. She was not the only designers to catch on to the popularity of this beach cover-up; Tibi has a beautiful black kaftan with an embellished collar on Stylebop.com (€379).
Matthew Williamson’s snake print kaftan is big news this year – his designs are spotted year in year out on the glitterati on holidays.
You’ll find some amazingly reduced Pucci print kaftans at Yoox and the Outnet.com, while Diane von Furstenberg has a beautiful blue kaftan with floral detail for sale on Netaporter (€211).
If you really want to up the glamour stakes, Aftershock have kaftans, tunics and sundresses with embellishments, embroidery and unusual prints. The most popular styles are sold out (some are quite Matthew Williamson looking) but you’re sure to find an original style here.
Monsoon/Accessorize always have some lovely beach cover-ups which usually have some sort of embellishment but if you like plain colours, then order online from Victoria’s Secret, who do great versions in cotton and jersey material.
If you’re on a budget, Penneys is good for cheap and cheerful kaftans though bear in mind that you get what you pay for in terms of quality.
