Vera Wang: Witchy gowns are great

Vera Wang had fun designing her "witchy" black wedding gowns.
The prolific wedding dress designer shocked the industry with her Fall 2012 show this month.
Vera presented a selection of black gowns in a stark contrast to the conventional white dress.
“I found black to be fresh and tongue-in-cheek,” Vera told the New York Times. “I did take it to a witchy kind of place. For me, it helped build a sense of mystery that I was hungry for. And it added this sensuality and sexuality, and a little bit of severity, too.”
Vera has become the go-to designer for celebrities wanting to look perfect on their big day. In the past Vera has designed dresses for Mariah Carey, Uma Thurman, Kate Hudson and Jennifer Garner among many others. Most recently she created three wedding dresses for reality TV star Kim Kardashian, and Vera admits that all these extravagant weddings inspired her decision to make a change.
“With all the big weddings that happened this year, it was fun to step out of the box,” she gushed.
In previous collections Vera has dabbled with pale green, lilac and dusky tones, but she has never taken such a bold step away from tradition. Her new gowns feature ruffles, swirls and corsets, which give the dresses an almost gothic appeal.
The Chinese-American designer wishes there had been a different option available when she got married.
“I wore white on my wedding day,” she remembered. “I was very frustrated, it being so traditional at the time, but the bridal industry wasn’t so evolved back then.”
