We’ve seen it before but underwear as outerwear was back with a vengeance this SS’10. Alexander Wang, Bottega Veneta, Jean Paul Gaultier, Christian Dior and Dolce & Gabanna all featured the trend to greater or lesser extent.

Wang kept it sporty with cotton corsets over grey sweats while Gaultier embraced the trends wholeheartedly with lace trimmed Basques, visible cups and silky satin.

There are no rules. Keep it subtle with a glimpse of a bra strap or go all out with full on underwear as outerwear.

Here are some tips to guide you through the tricky trend:

Begin with pieces edged in lace or sweaters with boned bra cups and build from there as you get braver.

Look for pretty camisoles, inside-out corsets, rounded bodices, big knickers!

Avoid anything overtly sexy like red and black

Opt for spring’s neutral and pastel palette for a softer, more romantic take

Play with chiffon and tulle layers to avoid feeling over exposed

Contrast girlie lingerie with a mannish blazer or leather jacket

Vintage is a great option for a softer, more authentic look

Unless you’ve got a perfect pins, be wary of the Fifties knickers
