Plum is this season's black and can be found everywhere – from brightly painted nails and glossy lips to thin lines under lashes, and even full-on blocks of colour on eyelids. So go on, indulge yourself.

Maybelline Superstay 10hr Tint Gloss in Timeless Plum, €11.49

Now, first up, no mere lip colour is going to last 10 hours, so while this silky gloss boasts good staying power, it's closer to the five-hour variety. But don't worry, it passes the wine-glass test with flying colours. Although the formulation is quite thick, it has a lightweight feel but it's somewhat unforgiving on dry, chapped lips.

Clinique Cream Shaper for Eyes in Starry Plum, €15

I've always been worried that using this shade on my eyes would make me look as if I hadn't slept in days. But after experimenting with this liner which leaves a subtle hint of colour, I have definitely changed my mind. It goes on smoothly, lasts all day and has just the right amount of shimmer.

Bobbi Brown Longwear Cream Shadow in Velvet Plum, €24.50

I love the soft, smooth texture of this range; the colours go on easily, last well and are very versatile, working either alone or as base under powders. This rich, shimmery bronzed-plum shade works on all skintones, but is seriously flattering on green-eyed gals, thanks to its warm earthy notes.

YSL Baby Doll Mascara in Purple, €32.50

Coloured mascaras may remind you of an '80s horror show, but it's time forget all those prejudices. The latest generation is stunning, sophisticated and sultry. This offering doesn't clump but separates, giving volume and length. Lashes appear thicker and there's no smudging or flaking. It is expensive though.

Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure in Plums the Word, €8.95

This seven-in-one formula offers great value and a glossy, opaque finish as long as you take the time to do a proper second coat.
