With a whole month of fashion weeks kicking off tomorrow in New York, it's crucial that fashion lovers are kept informed of all the hottest front row, backstage and catwalk gossip as it happens. If you want to be the first to know all the dirt from the world's most fashionable parties, where do you go? Twitter, of course.

The micro-blogging site, which could have been invented just for fashion week, had 175million active Tweeters or 'Tweeps' at the last official count in September 2010. But with an estimated 40 per cent of tweets amounting to 'pointless babble'* how do you know which fashionistas on Twitter are worth following and which will be banging on about what they had for breakfast?

The PeerIndex have compiled a list of the top UK fashion tweeps using their tried and tested algorithm which looks at three key metrics:

Authority: how well does a person resonate with their audience, and the world at large? How likely are they to say or share things other people will find interesting?

Audience: how large is a person's audience? How engaged are they?

Activity: how active is a person in order to drive the resonance and audience we see?

To figure this out, they look at several thousand factors for each calculation, with some of the maths used being closely related to Google's PageRank. These factors are weighted and provide an apples-for-apples score of 1 to 100, where 100 is God-like and 1 is more normal. (The median score is 19).

A person's PeerIndex score shows how much impact they are having with their social Web presence, whether that impact is from being a chatty populist, a seasoned and thoughtful commentator, or a curator of great links.

In short, it's much more nuanced than simply counting up the number of followers someone has, because that doesn't tell you much about the quality of someone's network or interactions.

So, without further ado, here is the list in full - oh, and of course don't forget to check out Independent Woman tweets for fashion, beauty, love and celeb news:
