The question of which pair of boots to invest in is one which comes up annually. Knee-highs are a safe option, ankle versions provide a fun alternative, while shoe-boots are a great choice for the truly fashion forward. But this season there’s a new contender – the thigh-high boot.

Previously the preserve of show girls or teenagers, this time round the footwear has had a revamp.

With heeled and flat versions, as well as types in a variety of hues and with embellishments and zips and buckles, there’s a pair out there for everyone.

The key thing to remember when testing this trend is what to wear thigh-highs with.

Teamed with bare legs and short skirts they can quickly become trashy, so take a leaf out of Kim Kardashian’s book and wear them with ultra-skinny jeans, a long-line top and blazer.

They also work well with short skirts and tights, as long as you go for a high opaque or woolly pair.

Try investing in some long socks to go under your boots. Not only will they keep your toes toasty, they look great peeping over the top of the footwear.

People’s leg shapes differ hugely, so it’s a good idea to try on several different versions so you get the perfect fit.

Buckles and zips will all ensure your boots stay put exactly as you want them to.

This is a trend which is already popular among Hollywood stars, with Christina Milian, Claudia Schiffer, Salma Hayek and Jessica Schwarz all seen out in different pairs.

If you like a bit of sparkle, try a pair decorated with diamante or studs at the top, there are plenty on the market, although it’s a look best saved for a flat boot.
