Life's a beach if this summer's most ubiquitous trend is anything to go by. Once only worn on holidays, now shorts have become a wardrobe staple, turning up in offices and nightclubs too.
And despite tumbling temperatures, the leggy look is going nowhere for winter.
"It's one of my favourite trends," says top stylist Marietta Doran. "I've even got a 'Shorts' album on [social network] Pinterest!
"Sometimes you don't feel like wearing a skirt, but you don't want to wear trousers either. Shorts are a great in-between style.
"But the best thing about wearing shorts in winter is that you don't have to worry about whether your legs are tanned – just throw on a pair of black tights!"
Olivia Palermo, Kate Moss and Jennifer Aniston are just some of the stars taking short cuts when it comes to style.
"Shorts are surprisingly wearable," adds Marietta. "Of course, teenagers are going to copy Rihanna's Daisy Dukes, but longer-line shorts can actually be very flattering.
"For autumn/winter, tweed, leather and graphic print shorts are going to be huge," she says. "Team them with a crisp shirt and blazer for work, then simply change into a sequin top to go from day to evening.
"If you've got long legs, wear them with pumps; if not, go for high heels!"
1. THE COMEBACK SHORTS
Is it a short? Is it a skirt? No, it's culottes! If you're a child of the Eighties, chances are you wore a pair of these bad boys for your Confirmation. Well, let's hope you held on to them because 'skorts' are back in a big way this autumn.
Who wears them: Rita Ora, Jennifer Lawrence
Do: Keep it cool(otte) with killer heels and a tee.
Don't: Actually dust down your floral ones from 1994.
Try them: Topshop Boutique wide leather culottes, €273
2. THE WORK SHORTS
Although more synonymous with skiving off, shorts can shout "take me seriously" too. If you can't decide between a skirt or trousers for the office, a sharp short suit could be the way to go.
Who wears them: Eva Longoria, Gwyneth Paltrow
Do: Team with a crisp blazer.
Don't: Flash too much thigh by the photocopier.
Try them: Jaeger turn-up shorts, €145
3. THE DRESSY SHORTS
Forget the 'LBD', now it's all about the 'LBS' – Little Black Shorts. For stars, it's the perfect red-carpet compromise – showing off shapely pins without running the risk of 'doing an Anne Hathaway'.
Who wears them: Kristen Stewart, Alexa Chung
Do: Look for leather, lace or sequins.
Don't: Wear black on top too unless you're off to a particularly fashionable funeral.
Try them: Marks & Spencer lace shorts, €40
4. THE 'SHORT' SHORTS
Denim cut-offs so short they'd make even Daisy Duke blush have been the fashion story of the year so far. And the dreaded 'underbutt' is going nowhere, with designers such as Kristina Ti giving new meaning to 'shorts' this season as well.
Who wears them: Rihanna, Miley Cyrus
Do: Protect your modesty with a pair of black tights.
Don't: Bother wearing undies.
Try them (if you dare): Asos.com check denim shorts, €28.63
5. THE STATEMENT SHORTS
Neon, aztec print and floral cut-offs were everywhere over the festival season. And this is one trend that isn't going to be short-lived, with animal and graphic print all the rage for autumn.
Who wears them: Katherine Jenkins, Miranda Kerr
Do: Build your outfit around your favourite colour in the shorts.
Don't: Be afraid to go for the boldest hue.
Try them: Penneys '90s print shorts, €13
6. THE IT SHORTS
First the It Bag, and now the It shorts. You're no-one in Tinseltown unless you're rocking a pair of scalloped shorts right now. Preferably with a Chloé or Jean Paul Gaultier label.
Who wears them: Olivia Palermo, Chloë Sevigny
Do: Go for a mid-thigh pair which are most flattering.
Don't: Attempt to do-it-yourself.
Try them: Miss Selfridge grey fleuro embellished shorts, €61
7. THE SORT-OF SHORTS
OK, so technically we're cheating with this one, but combining the trendiness of shorts with the ease of a dress, playsuits take the leg work out of 2013's hottest look. From long-sleeved to dungaree, happily rompers are sticking around for autumn.
Who wears them: Una Healy, Katy Perry
Do: Go to the loo before you put it on.
Don't: Go to the loo while still wearing it.
Try it: Boohoo.com monochrome studded front playsuit, €38
8. THE 'MORTS'
Be afraid – girls aren't the only ones getting their gams out this autumn. Men's shorts – or 'Morts' as we're calling them – could be making their way from the football field to the high street after Versace sent its male models down the runway in hotpants at Milan Fashion Week.
Who wears them: Brendan Courtney, model Baptiste Giabiconi
Do: Avoid socks and sandals at all costs.
Don't: Borrow your wife's.
Try them: Label J turn-up shorts, €37.49 from Oxendales.ie
