Dublin's RDS was a carnival of colourful fashion and spectacular hairstyles yesterday as the Organisation Mondial Coiffure (OMC) European Championships in hair, beauty, nails and body painting got under way.

More than 400 of the world's most talented and imaginative players in the hair and beauty industry from countries including Italy, Austria, the United States, France and Norway are competing at the two-day competition for the coveted OMC cups.

Hundreds of Irish hair stylists are also battling it out for Irish Hairdresser of the Year title at the event.

The junior competitions began yesterday with stylists creating a number of elaborate fantasy coiffures.

Last year the Irish Hairdresser of the Year prize was won by Carla McQuillan from House of Colour in Dublin.

The winners of this year's competition will be announced at 6pm today.
